Common Questions About Laser Hair Removal

How does Laser Hair Removal Work?

  • The laser of LightSheer emits an intense light that is well absorbed by melanin, the main pigment source in the skin, thus anything with melanin within it is heated up by the light.
  • Hair has more of this pigment in a much larger volume than normal skin, therefore the hairs get more heated than the rest of the skin and we can destroy the hair without damage to the skin.

How well does Laser Hair Removal work?

  • Laser hair removal works VERY well as long as the hair is not blonde, red, or white. Both skin color and hair color make a big difference in how well laser treatment works and what settings are required.
  • The easiest to treat is a dark-haired, pale-skinned individual. Each treatment will reduce the number of hairs and it typically takes 4-6 treatments to satisfy the majority of people. Treatments are usually ever 1-3 months.
  • Just one treatment will impact the density of the hair permanently.

The individual laser pulse causes a stinging sensation. While older models can be quite painful, the LightSheer Desire is a much more GENTLE experience. Most patients simply describe a more mild stinging sensation and no anesthetic is ever needed.

The large headpiece also provides a sucking sensation which, while odd, is not painful. The vacuum improves contact with the laser at the desired distance which reduces the amount of blood in skin being treated, thus a more comfortable experience.

Typically, there is no redness post-treatment and laser hair removal should not interfere with desired activity. However, we recommend a gap in treatment just to be careful!

This is possible. Tanned skin is much harder to work on and skin is more easily damaged by the laser, so there is a higher chance of post-treatment discoloration. We can adjust the parameter’s within the LightSheer to minimize these chances, but it’s still easier if you are not tan.

If you have a history of herpes in the area, the irritation of the laser can also activate the infected area. If you have such a history, an antiviral is recommended before treatment.

Some medications can increase photo-sensitivity. This is typically not an issue at all, but with most of these medicines it is also possible to simply stop taking the medicine before your treatment.

Do NOT wax before this treatment, as if there is no hair there to treat, the treatment will not work.

Areas directly over a tattoo cannot be treated as well either.

Not always. The vast majority of hair removed will never grow back. However, as years pass some hair regrowth may occur. The number of hairs that grow back will be dramatically less and the hairs themselves will be more pale, thin, and less visible.

In general, LightSheer is appropriate for all skin tones and for all body areas. But, laser hair removal in Tallahassee might not be right for everyone and there are some risks of side effects. LightSheer isn’t suitable if you have an active infection or inflammation; viral, fungal or bacterial disease; active cold sore; or open wound or abrasion in the area you want to treat. Risks may include changes to skin pigmentation and texture, or burns. Always speak to your treatment provider, who’ll be able to tell you about the possible side effects of laser hair removal and help you decide whether LightSheer is right for you.

Laser Hair Removal questions

Hair removal is no longer just for women. And, it’s no longer just for men who are cyclists, swimmers, bodybuilders or dancers. In recent years it has become more and more common for men all around the world, and of all ages, to get treatments to remove or thin-out body hair, particularly on the back or chest. Generally, LightSheer is suitable for all areas and types of hair of both men and women.

“Is laser hair removal safe?” is one of the most important questions to consider. For safety and comfort, and to minimize laser hair removal side effects, LightSheer uses two types of FDA-approved technologies: High-speed vacuum assisted technology – The optimal solution for coverage of large areas quickly and effectively, and requiring no gel. The High Speed Handpiece applies gentle suction to lift and stretch the skin, allowing the laser to be optimally absorbed into the hair. The vacuum also helps to reduce the sensation of heat associated with other laser hair removal solutions. ChillTip™ integrated cooling technology – A unique sapphire crystal cooling system continuously cools the skin to make the sensation more comfortable. The ChillTip™ is pressed against the skin and cools the treated area before, during and after the laser pulse is emitted, removing the sensation of heat. Compressing the skin during treatment also ensures that the energy is better absorbed by the hair follicle. LightSheer is FDA-approved for all skin types (I – VI) and can safely treat any body part except for the small area inside the bony ridge of the eye socket.

The body areas that can be treated depend on the laser hair removal treatment device. In general, LightSheer treatments are suitable for all types of hair and for most of the body areas.

Several factors determine treatment time. The size and “topography” of the treatment area, and the amount of preparation, all affect the time required. Typically, full legs or backs will take less than half an hour, while upper lip, chin, bikini area, underarms, or back of the neck, may need just five to 10 minutes.

Laser hair removal provides permanent results, but it can take some time. In the weeks following each treatment some hairs will shed from the treated area and you should notice less hair growth as you progress through the course of your treatments. This means you can expect to see a long-term stable reduction in the number of hairs re-growing in the treated area following the completion of the full treatment program. * Permanent hair reduction is defined as the long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs re-growing when measured at 6, 9 and 12 months after the completion of a treatment regime.

Typically, initial results can be noticed following the first few treatments (~2), and significant results after four treatments. Consult your treatment provider for information related to your specific treatment needs.

The size and complexity of the area treated, along with other factors, all affect the cost of laser hair removal. Ask your treatment provider for cost-effective combinations of treatments, or inquire about an incentive for patient referrals as a way to offset some of the costs. Note that LightSheer treatment costs vary by geographic area and practitioner. To get more precise costs, consult a treatment provider in your area.
